Reading success!

Reading Week 4

During Reading this week, the 'Wind' group have been looking at Droughts that have happened around the world including in New Zealand and the effects that this has on people, places and animals. We have been looking at researching skills and being able to re-write information using the most important parts of a text.
Here is a sample of one students work.

2k17 X-Country + Celebration Afternoon

At the end of last term, Sockburn School celebrated the term with a combination of Cross Country and celebrating the term with friends and whanau.
We had a range of different obstacles that students, ran over, through, under and around, including a massive puddle thanks to the rain we had that week!

We had loads of fun with championship runs, house runs, adult runs and chants!

We have the West Zone Cross Country coming up this week with 19 of our students competing! Good luck guys!

Welcome to 2017!

Welcome to Kahikatea 2017!

Welcome back OR to Kahikatea for 2017.. what a year it is going to be!
We are currently in Week 2, we have started using Chromebooks, swimming and mingling with all the new members to the Kahikatea learning space. It has been an action packed few days, but we are excited to be back!

We thought we would first let you know where to come to see what learning is going on in Kahikatea, below if you click the picture, it will take you to the class site.

This year in Kahikatea, we have put some structure in place to make it easier to communicate for parents, caregivers and family. We have the Launch, Lab and the Study. These spaces are used in regards to our learning..
Launch - where learning takes off
Lab - where the 'nitty gritty' happens, group work, discussions etc.
Study - quiet working, getting things done!

If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact any of the three teachers here in Kahikatea, no matter what homegroup your child is in.

Mannequin Challenge

The Mannequin Challenge is a viral internet video trend where people are frozen as a camera moves through to film them so, of course, Kahikatea HAD to get on board.

We headed outside to do our usual Friday Dodgeball match and this is what happened...

Eat, Sleep, Swim, Repeat!

The last two weeks of Term 3 have been busy with swimming lessons!
We have had instructors taking us for lessons in both swimming and survival. During the second week we had to bring extra clothes and get into the pool in our clothes! This made them super heavy and hard to swim in, but was also really fun to do and we learnt lots in case we were ever caught out in trouble!

It's been fun being able to go to Kings Swim School and show off all our skills!

Potato Planting is upon us!

Potato Planting 2016!

For weeks we had been chitting potatoes! This meant that while potatoes rested in Kahikatea they started to grow little nodules.

The first week of September is potato planting week! We headed out to the garden with Mr. Rob and listened to how to grow the best potatoes!

Mr Rob dug some rows for us and we dropped a potato in each,
making sure that they were about a hand apart AND chits up so that they don't grow sideways.
Once we had all put our potatoes in the ground Mr. Rob covered them in a mound like shape. This helps them grow, according to Mr. Rob.

It's awesome getting out into the garden with Mr. Rob! We're super lucky to have the garden and him around to give us awesome life skills!
